  • Fantastic material. Fabulous performances. Fair recording.

Schumann's Concerto for Four Horns thunders off the first track and keeps going through all three movements. The rest of the material is a fantastic selection from the horn repertorie. The recording itself is a little odd. The tympani, low brass, and low strings sound distant, and the whole recording seems a bit muddy. It does not diminish the performances at all but I have heard crisper recordings from Naxos. And to be fair, the recording is not over-engineered with exaggerated dynamics or microphones stuck-in-the-horn-bell sound. Well worth listening to.
  • Great album, but . . .

. . . nothing compares to hearing these guys in person! I had the honor of hearing them perform the Conzertstuck at the Midwest Horn Conference in 2001. I deeply admire how each member of this group plays their own parts as if they are ALL the principal -- the low horn part on the Conzertstuck is played so effortlessly, I am always in awe! Even listening to this right now, and writing this review here after midnight, just makes me want to get my horn out of the gig bag and try to play along, no matter how many neighbors I'd wake up!!!!!!!
  • Cleanest and purest recording! Not American Style though

I only bought this album for the Conzertstuck and that is what the focus of this review will be. This is definitely the cleanest and most perfect recording out there. However the title "AMERCIAN Horn Quartet" may be misleading. I would say that their style is more English (Dennis Brain-- mellow with insane accuracy) while a more American recording would be the "Chicago Symphony Principal Players" CD. Dale Clevenger, Oldberg, Schweikert, and Howell play with their classic massive sound that we expect from the Chicago brass, and is also the American sound that we expect from a CD entitled that. I also personally prefer the orchestra performance in the Chicago CD. I guess whatever style you prefer would dictate the CD that you prefer. Either way you get a great performance of an amazing piece.
  • Concetos for Four Horns by ... who?

I didn't buy this, though I was tempted, because the iTunes Music Store didn't reveal the names of the composers of the music...Typical of the poor support for "classical" music from Apple. I also tend to avoid buying my classical music from iTunes because it arrives broken up into individual movements, and there is no way to stick them to gether as when ripping CDs. That messes things up when I want to use "shuffle" mode.
  • Good, but not great

While I agree with the previous reviews as far as the performances are concerned, I do have an issue with the sound quality-----muffled, somewhat distant and garbled at certain passages. Seems as though the mikes were not placed in the ideal location to pick up each horn.
