Awesome Score!

The movie itself was very scattered and seemed to lack depth and emotion. But the last scene put the movie together very nicely, especially accompanied by Mansell's Dead Reckoning. The soundtrack of the film gave it the depth the actual picture lacked, and the closing scene made you forgive the past hour and half. Thanks to that final track, I think I really enjoy the movie.
I hated the movie until the final scene...

...when "Dead Reckoning" began to play. All of a sudden I sat up a little straighter and knew I had to get that song. The movie was pretty awful, but it was worth sitting through it for that song. One of my favorites.

Smokin' Aces had the ingredients to be a spectacular film, but falls short in its confused ability to create an identity and develop a strong enough plot. The production and direction is confused on whether it wants to be a Guy Ritchie "Snatch" styled movie or a reflective serious action-drama. Clint Mansell provides greatly for the latter, especially with "Dead Reckoning's" use in the final scene with Ryan Reynolds' reflective dilemma. Clint Mansell provides superb music time and time again and unlike Smokin' Aces the movie, does not let us down.

Former lead singer and guitarist of Pop Will Eat Itself, Clint Mansell matures into a Golden Globe nominated composer, and a winner of numerous awards for best original score for a film. I have previously sang praises to Mansell's musical scores to Darren Aronofsky's Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and, of course, The Fountain. Being in love with Mansell's melancholic modern classical pieces, which are perfectly complemented by the performance of The Kronos Quartet, I decided to grab the soundtrack to Smokin' Aces - I have not seen the film, and instead listened to the album "as is" - as music. From the first track I am immensed in haunting images that glide with that uneasy feeling of something lurking in the shadows, until it all explodes with tension breaks of silence. In the soundtrack he effortlessly controls the mood, dynamics, and even the genre of individual pieces. The orchestral accompaniment works very well with an organic big beat and a funky rhythm. The scenes switch, and so does the music. Forty five minutes of music take you through mental images driven by emotion saturated sound. Mansell is clearly a craftsman of his trade, and Smokin' Aces may be his most cinematic composition to date.
F*%KING AWESOME.

The Clint Mansell string quartet is the best thing to happen to movie soundtracks since the end of silent films. His score for this movie continues the tradition he started back with Requiem for a Dream. A good movie that was made great by his music. A must buy.
Definantly a Mansell's Work

I heard about his album after hearing Dead Reckoning in a youtube video and mistaking it for a song from The Fountain. When comparing both scores, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Mansell has developed a unique style that can be seen through out his later works. It is more mature than some of the earlier music he composed, such as Pi and Requiem for a Dream. Don't get me wrong, those are both great scores and I love to listen to them. This score is an amazing work. The last three songs of the score have such emotion that I am always on the verge of tears when I listen to them. The score was able to add so much to the movie.
Thank you..Thank you...Thank you...
