I bought this album because of a cousin who had been in the play at UFMC in SA, Texas. Really great!! Exciting!! Upbeat!! I like gospel music even upbeat and loud. However, some songs should be kept the original way. (Not on this CD)
  • Nice, but not the original

This is very listenable, but I also feel the original movie soundtrack set the standard, and remains the best. Having said that, any version of Godspell is worth sitting down and listening to.

"By My Side" by Peggy Gordon and Company has a delicate, haunting quality that is not present in all the other versions. Katie Hanley's version is fine but lacks ths sublety of this version. For this alone, I adore this album.
  • Not the one to buy

great great album BUT its missing "prologue/tower of babel". This is the most intricate and one of the best songs in the show! its important! also the guy who sings "all good gifts" has a voice that doesnt fit the song well in my opinion. its an opera voice, so he should stick to opera. these are my two major complaints. I dont think this is the album to buy.

I have to take issue with some of the "reviewers" who are casting aspersions on this, the ORIGINAL (as in, THE FIRST) Godspell soundtrack...saying things like "the movie soundtrack is THE QUINTESSENTIAL VERSION" and this one falls short of that lofty description. You guys are entitled to your praises of the movie soundtrack, but to turn your noses up at this original cast recording & say it's inferior is not only insulting, but ill-informed. You'd do well to bear in mind that a lot of us bought this recording a LONG time before the movie soundtrack even came out, and the cast in this recording is nothing short of remarkable. To the person who said he "can't stand hearing Lamar Alford sing" because of the operatic quality of his voice: well, boo-hoo, bucko; sorry that a professional-sounding voice causes you such distress! And papasmack's comment that Peggy's singing of "By My Side" "sounds like Phoebe Snow" is nothing short of moronic, if only for the fact that her voice sounds NOTHING LIKE Phoebe Snow's. If you guys are going to attack other musicians, it might behoove you to have some solid facts to back up your accusations before you start lobbing them. I'm not going to climb up on a pedestal and say, in response to the naysayers here, that one of these two is better than the other--I'm taking the high road and saying what I believe a lot of us feel: that BOTH recordings have merit. Stephen Nathan & Vcitor Garber are BOTH great in the roles of Jesus; Lamar Alford & Jermaine Jackson BOTH do great versions of "All Good Gifts." We're talking apples and oranges here, kids. My OWN preference (which is probably obvious by now) is this original cast version, because I listened to it faithfully for 2 years before the movie came out, and fell in love with both the songs and the singers. And when the movie came out, I loved it and bought the soundtrack to it, too. In putting them next to each other, there just happened to be more things I liked in the OCR than in the movie soundtrack. I hope this will level the playing field a little and give readers a more unbiased view of two very classy, professional, & ultimately uplifting recordings.

This show has a lot of heart. It's funny too. I was in it for my musical theater workshop class. I got a solo for Bless the Lord which is one of the best songs in the show. I got a couple of lines. The ending is so sad and I actually cried during rehearsal and the shows. But most of the music is so upbeat and fun. So, I recommend you to get this album. Also, if there is ever an opportunity to see this show... go see it! It's amazing. It will make you wish that you were up onstage.

I peformed this musical with a local theater group, and even though I'm a UU I loved it. The songs are super catchy, and the play itself is witty and fun. If you don't want to buy the whole album, I reccomend; 1. All for the Best 2. We Beseech Thee 3. On the Willows P.S. Our Jesus was AWESOME! Very godly ;)
