  • Came out my senior year in high school. I had the tape, he was billed as Common Sense at the time.

For me Common's debut album was hugely ignored and unappreciated. This itself was not any fault of Common's or the talent apparent in his work but to his being relatively unknown. Still, this album is perfect in it's own way and shouldn't be ignored if you truly love Common.

This is my 3rd favorite album from common. My 2nd fav..is like water for chocolate and my favorite(his best) is RESSURECTION. Take it EZ and Charms Alarm are my favorite tracks off this album.

It isn't iTunes' fault they aren't on the store. iTunes can't just post anything they want, because that would be illegal. The Beatles would have to give their music to iTunes, and they decided not to do that. Sometimes, it's the same way with songs that are album only. If it's a remix, it was probably the record companies' decision. But as long as we're talking about old songs, I'm pretty sure it was iTunes' decision to put American Pie on album only. But this is a Common album. This is a classic. But what's really sad is that this was normal when it first came out. Back in '92 when rap was still alive. Back then, Common wasn't that exceptional. The exceptional thing about him was that he could continue making good music when everyone else decided not to.

I have been a fan of Common back when his last name was Sense and His first single Soul by the Pound was remixed and released as The Single. This album was wack back when it came out, and just because Com got a million times better doesn't mean that THIS album got any better. He himself has said in songs that he is glad that he survived somehow and got better than this crap that he dropped. If you like Common now, dont buy this album. Go buy one of his newer ones...

If you're form the Chi...you probably got this where I got it- from Lonnie, Tone's or Dions' hand fro a sawbuck.. You could tell Common was going to do something more, but were worried it would get lost with the other dope LPs from the Chi-as the industry tended to do with us. When the second CLASSIC album came out we held this one close and ordered "SOul By THe Pound" multiple times on the box, smugly cheesing about how everybody else finally caught up to the Chi!

Man.....am I so happy to find this album.....I saved the tape in a shoebox, but don't have a tape player. I remember bein in high school and I use to tape Rap City......Soul By the Pound rocked me......Certain albums have that lasting impression and to be honest, I never thought Common would be the artist he is today. Awesome evolution of a artist. You need to cop this album and study.

It's insane to listen to Common now and Common then. From "Can I Borrow a Dollar?" to "Finding Forever", Common has become an icon for spoken word and love songs in hip-hop. This album displays his "wild side" and is alot of fun. I easily give it 5-stars for its lyrics, melodies, and its old school No I.D. production.
