One of the best albums I've ever bought.

The solo piano version of The Hours, played by Michael Riesman, is every bit as good as the original soundtrack. Due to the simpler arrangement (done by Riesman and Glass' famed protoge Nico Muhly, by the way), a certain elegance and profundity are simultaneously established. It is often said that the best music sounds good on whatever instrument on which it's played; this is certainly true for the soundtrack to The Hours. The original orchestral soundtrack to The Hours has already won a number of awards, and yet this version continues to haunt me with its beauty. If you're looking for a wildly experimental Philip Glass, this is not the place to look. The Hours is a culmination of a life's work in film music for Glass (although we can hope he still has many more ahead of him), and it is justly his most cohesive.
  • Michael Riesman Did Not Write This Music

This score was written by Philip Glass. Riesman is only playing a piano version. And this is not the original film soundtrack recording which is much better. The original music is more haunting and fuller because it's a full orchestra. This is a cheap imitation.
  • Film Score vs. Solo Piano

Though an excellent album in its own right, just realize that this is not the original film score, but a version arranged for solo piano. The original, orchestral score is also available on iTunes... so just make sure you're buying the one you want.
  • Better Than The Other...

I just heard the score for this film in two different versions, or am I hearing two different scores for two different films............ I don't know, can someone fill me in, because I really liked this one. The piano works, and the juxtaposition at certain key points actually blow the other score out of comparison. Much better. Buy this one.
  • Beautiful Music for an Amazing Movie

This is by far Michael Riesman's best work (also "The Illusionist" and "Notes on a Scandel"). The music fits perfectly with the movie and the 3 lives of the women. I listen to this soundtrack all the time, when I go to sleep or when I'm reading a book or anytime. Very much worth it.

I have never listened to a CD more than I have listened to this one. There has never been a more beautiful song composed than "Dead Things." This CD isn't for everyone, but I love it.
