  • Excellent Album

By The Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers balances the raw energy of their early days with a more refined, melodic side. Released in 2002, the album feels like a conversation between the band's acrimonious past and their growth as musicians. The opening track, "By The Way," bursts with an infectious energy that quickly cajoles listeners into the album’s emotional push and pull. It's clear from the start that they've figured out how to ameliorate their chaotic punk-funk roots with cleaner, more polished songwriting, but that underlying tension still simmers in the background. Songs like "Dosed" and "Tear" illustrate this shift toward a smoother sound, a contrast to the short-lived bursts of adrenaline found in tracks like "Can't Stop" and "Throw Away Your Television." The band's ability to swing between these styles shows their range, though at times, it feels like that high-energy rush is more ephemeral than nessecary, it comes and goes quickly, leaving us wanting more. Despite the softer tone of some songs, the album never feels indolent. Tracks like "The Zephyr Song" carry an undeniable sense of purpose, capturing the spirit of a band that has found new ways to channel their energy. Their once seemingly infallible reliance on chaos has matured into something more thoughtful, though that wild side still makes its presence known in flashes. That said, not every song hits the mark. "Midnight" feels perfunctory, lacking the same opulence and depth found in other tracks. While still solid, it doesn’t quite stand out in the same way, leaving us with the sense that some moments were more filler than essential listening. Anthony Kiedis's lyrics carry a penitent tone in songs like "Venice Queen," reflecting on the past with both regret and resolution. The melodies often feel lush and layered, complementing the emotional weight they've added to their music over the years. In By The Way, the Red Hot Chili Peppers manage to keep pushing forward while still holding onto the fire that got them here. It’s a mix of intensity and introspection, a snapshot of a band growing up, but still holding tight to the things that make them who they are.

Well these guys are one of my top 5 favorite bands. Dosed is a top 5 favorite song of all time. Another gem is Midnight. Even in 2022 with their latest album, Unlimited Love, they continue to put out great music. Look past the hits to find out just how musically creative these guys are. I hope they continue to bless us with their great music. As great as a guitarist as John Frusiante is, he is also terribly underrated as a singer with his amazing harmonizing vocals. Long live RHCP and thank you for making our lives so much better with your great music. I love you all.

I have been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers for many years and I honestly love this album. If your going on to buy a song or 2 from this album buy Minor Thing or Venice Queen there both beautiful songs with incredible harmonics by John Fruscante (The former lead guitarist of RHCP).

15+ years of listening to this album and pretty much every song has been a favorite of mine at some point. No other alternative rock album has really topped it since and it never grows old which a sign of classic. Get the deluxe version instead.
