In American Head, there is hope in Wayne Coyne’s lifting plaintive vocals, but with that hope, comes a grounding of memory-soaked reflections, fed by a vein of nostalgic sadness. American Head is about many of us, growing up in the age of drug use and abuse. This pandemic has turned our lives upside down, plenty of time to reminisce, as Wayne seems to be doing, reminiscing about his life and his past, in Norman, Oklahoma. This feels like a soundtrack to life under a pandemic. I have it on repeat. Also, Kacey Musgrave is a guest vocalist, and her voice sounds really cool running through the Flaming Lips filter. Must mention Steven Drozd, Wayne’s genius partner in crime, such great work.
